US-based technology company Department 13 is leading the global race to develop counter-drone technology to defeat the rise of drones as tools of international terrorism.

With sales of drones around the world exceeding $14 billion in 2015, the threat posed by the weaponisation of recreational drones is already a reality.

Department 13 CEO Jonathan Hunter says the unregulated proliferation of drones in Australia poses a significant danger to Australias national security.

Mr Hunter said: Australia has no defence against terrorist drone attacks. Critical technology infrastructure, military bases, public buildings, sport stadiums, power stations, offshore oil & gas platforms and political leaders are all vulnerable to drone attacks. ISIS have already used drones to launch attacks against civilian and military targets in the Middle East, so the threat is real and should not be under-estimated.

Department 13s Mesmer counter-drone technology system was recently selected as a finalist to the exclusive Mitre Counter Drone Challenge event and was invited in April to participate in the US Defense Departments Black Dart counter drone test and demonstration exercise. The Mesmer technology allows a single operator to capture, defeat and neutralise a single drone or a multiple drone swarm attack, rendering every drone within the defined area inoperable.

In Australia, recreational drone sales are not regulated and recreational drone ownership is not licensed by the Commonwealth government.
